Why flags fade
Memory fades on a predictable curve
In the 1880s, Hermann Ebbinghaus spent two years measuring how fast he forgot things. The pattern he found has been confirmed over and over since. We call it the forgetting curve: what you learn drops away sharply in the first day or two, then the decline slows. Cram two hundred flags in one sitting and most of them are gone by the weekend. It is also why a quiz you aced last week can feel brand new today.
Plenty of flag apps carry on as if this curve weren’t there. You take a quiz, you get a number, and nobody checks whether any of it survives to tomorrow. We started from the curve instead, and the whole game is shaped around keeping you ahead of it.
Spacing it out
Spaced repetition beats cramming
Take a fixed amount of study time and spread it across several days, and you will remember far more than if you’d spent it all at once. Researchers call this the spacing effect, and it is one of the most heavily tested ideas in the study of memory. The timing is what matters. Recall a flag just as it is starting to slip and it comes back stronger, and it holds on longer before fading again.
So every flag in FlagDrop has its own forgetting curve. The game tracks those curves and brings each flag back for review right around the point where you’d otherwise lose it. Catch it there and the curve flattens, buying you weeks where you used to get days. Show it too soon and the review is wasted effort. Leave it too long and you are starting from scratch.

There is a real gap between recognising something and recalling it. Spotting the right answer in a list is recognition, and it comes far more easily than pulling a fact out of cold storage with nothing to prompt you. Retrieval is the harder act, and it is the one that actually strengthens the memory. Psychologists call this the testing effect, and it is one of the sturdiest results in the field.
That harder act is the heart of every round. You see a flag and you place its country on the world map yourself, from memory, with nothing to choose from. A quick name check follows, a tap to pick it out from the flags it is most often confused with, which keeps you moving rather than typing. Reaching mastered takes both halves together, and the cold recall of placing it is the part that matters most. Recognising the name on its own won’t carry a flag over the line. Hints are there for when you’re properly stuck, but lean on one and that flag won’t tip into mastered. A flag is only yours when you can find it cold and pair it with the right name.

Each flag carries two numbers. Strength is how well you know it this minute. Stability is how slowly it fades. Answer cleanly and unaided and both climb; miss it and both fall back. The number that matters over the long run is stability, because it grows a little with every well-spaced success. A flag you have nailed a handful of times across a few weeks will hold for months, not days. Fresh flags are delicate and need revisiting often. Old, well-drilled ones can be left alone for a long while. It is the same machinery behind the serious spaced-repetition tools, retuned for flags.

Better than any flag quiz
A normal quiz checks what you know in a single moment and then forgets all about you. FlagDrop keeps a running picture of every flag for you, one country at a time. It learns which ones you keep mixing up, brings them back when they need another look, and only counts a flag as yours once it has genuinely stuck. Anyone can memorise a few flags for an afternoon.
