How to tell them apart

The flags of Costa Rica and Thailand are both five bands of red, white and blue with a double-width centre band, so they’re easy to mix up at a glance. This is what gives each one away:

1. Thailand runs red, white, blue, white, red from the top; Costa Rica runs blue, white, red, white, blue.
2. Costa Rica's state flag adds its coat of arms in a white oval on the red band, towards the hoist.
3. Costa Rica's flag is longer: 3:5, against Thailand's 2:3.
